Supporting Our Veteran Community During National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October marks National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), an annual observance dedicated to celebrating the invaluable contributions of America's workers with disabilities. For many of our incredible Veterans, the journey to civilian life includes navigating and managing a service-connected disability. While NDEAM is for all who experience a disability, we are taking this opportunity to highlight Veterans, not just as a nod to their resilience; but a focused opportunity to ensure they’re connected to every single resource they've earned and deserve.

What is Disability Employment Services for Veterans?

Disability employment services are specialized programs designed with a clear mission: to help individuals with disabilities, especially our Veterans, prepare for, find, and maintain fulfilling employment. Think of them as a personal career toolkit, tailored just for you.

Let’s shine a light on a couple of key federal programs that are absolute game-changers for Veterans:

VA Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E, or Chapter 31): This is the premier program for service-connected Disabled Veterans! It's not just a helping hand; it's a comprehensive roadmap with five main tracks, including Reemployment, Rapid Access to Employment, and Self-Employment. It’s about building a career that thrives.
Disabled Veterans Outreach Program (DVOP) Specialists: The Department of Labor ensures these dedicated specialists—often Veterans themselves—are right there in your local American Job Centers. They provide individualized career services and case management, helping you cut through the noise and get to what matters.

Why Disability Employment Awareness is Essential for Veterans

NDEAM isn't just a fancy acronym or random “holiday”; it's a powerful movement! For our Veteran community, it’s about breaking down barriers and building bridges.

Building Bridges: Disability employment awareness educates employers and the public about the unique, high-level skills Veterans gain in service: discipline, leadership, and problem-solving. These aren't just keywords; they're assets that make you an invaluable part of any team.
Inclusion is the Key: Creating inclusive workplaces is vital. We understand that Veterans with disabilities can sometimes feel marginalized or like they have to hide their conditions. NDEAM boldly fights this stigma, affirming that every Veteran deserves to be seen, valued, and celebrated for who they are and what they bring.
Accommodations Are Simpler Than You Think: Many employers are surprised to learn that most job accommodations are simple and low-cost, including modified schedules or ergonomic equipment. Recognizing this empowers employers to easily support their Veteran team members.
A Win-Win for Everyone: Hiring disabled Veterans isn't just the right thing to do; it’s smart business. It strengthens the economy and provides employers with highly trained, reliable, and dedicated talent.

What Veterans Should Know About Disability Employment

Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to your career and rights!

Know Your Rights: The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) ensures that military members can return to their civilian jobs and are protected from discrimination based on their service or disability. Your service is honored, and your rights are protected.
Chapter 31 is Your Power Tool: Seriously, the VA’s VR&E (Chapter 31) program is crucial for comprehensive support. From education benefits to long-term career planning, it’s designed to set you up for success. Don’t hesitate – apply here!
Use Dedicated Specialists: We encourage you to seek out a Disabled Veterans' Outreach Program (DVOP) specialist at your local employment center. They're there for one-on-one attention and personalized guidance.
Embrace the Theme: Each year's disability employment awareness month theme (like this year’s "Celebrating Value and Talent") offers a hopeful and forward-looking perspective. Let that spirit fuel your job search!
