Why We Observe: Memorial Day vs. Veterans Day Explained

Hey everyone! As May rolls around, we often hear about holidays that honor our military. But, let's be honest, it can get a little confusing, right? Memorial Day and Veterans Day... what's the difference? At Visory Health, we're all about clarity and support, especially for our Veterans. So, let's clear up any confusion and talk about how we can show our appreciation.

Memorial Day: Remembering Those We've Lost

Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a solemn day of remembrance. It's a time to honor the brave men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Think of it as a day to pause and reflect on the ultimate sacrifice made by these heroes.

Honoring All Who Served... and Sacrificed

It's crucial to emphasize that Memorial Day is specifically for those who died in service. We're talking about the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines who gave their lives for our country.

What to Say on Memorial Day

Instead of a cheery "Happy Memorial Day," it can be more appropriate to offer a heartfelt "Thank you" or simply a moment of silence. You can also express gratitude for their sacrifice. Phrases like "honoring all who served" can be used, but always keep the focus on remembrance.

Memorial Day vs. Veterans Day vs. Armed Forces Day

Let’s break it down:

Memorial Day: Honors those who died in service.
Veterans Day (November 11th): Celebrates all who have served, both living and deceased.
Armed Forces Day (Third Saturday in May): Honors those currently serving in the U.S. military.

Veterans Day: Celebrating Service

Veterans Day, celebrated on November 11th, is a different kind of holiday. It's a day to thank and honor all who have served in the United States military, whether they're still with us or have passed away.

How To Thank a Veteran on Veterans Day

On Veterans Day, it's absolutely appropriate to say "Thank you for your service" or "Thank you for your military service." It's a day to express our gratitude for their dedication and commitment. And really, anytime you meet a Veteran, you’re always welcome to say a kind “Thank you for your service.”

Veterans, Thank You for Your Service

These words carry a lot of weight. They acknowledge the sacrifices made by our Veterans and show that we value their contributions.

Advocating for better healthcare and resources
Remembering their sacrifices
